The Plough and the Stars - 215.733.0300 - This Irish restaurant derives its name from a 1926 play by the Irish playwright Brian Friel, first performed in Dublin, called The Plough and the Stars.

It is located on the east side of 2nd Street, just above the intersection of 2nd and Chestnut Streets. If you like history and architecture with your meal, it is located in a former bank known as the Corn Exchange Building, constructed early in the 20th century.

National Mechanics makes its home in the National Mechanics Building, which was built by architect William Strickland in 1837. Sassafras International Cafe - 215.925.2317 - Located at 48 South 2nd Street - 2nd Street just below Market Street. If you're wondering about the name - "Sassafras Street" was the original name for "Race Street". (The Cafe, ironically, isn't actually on Race Street!)

The Continental Restaurant and Martini Bar - 215.923.6069 - Located at 138 Market Street - Market Street between Front and 2nd Street. This place is very conspicuous, on the southeast corner of 2nd and Market Streets, right next to the SEPTA el's 2nd Street Station.

SOHO Pizza - 215.625.3955 - 218 Market Street - Located on Market Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Casual stop for pizza.

Campo's Deli - 215.923.1000 - 214 Market Street - Located on Market Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Inexpensive, mom-and-pop, cheese steak and sandwich place operated by the Campo family - which has been in Old City since 1947, when it was much less trendy than it is today.

Old City Asian Bistro - 215.922.6222 (incredibly easy number to remember) - 206 Market Street - Located on Market, between 2nd and 3rd Streets. In this case, the name of the restaurant tells it all - you see the sign, you know what you're getting! Namely, Asian Fusion cuisine in Old City Philadelphia.

Old City Cheese Shop - 215.238.1716 - 160 North 3rd Street - Located on 3rd Street, between Arch and Race Streets. Don't let the name fool you - it isn't just a cheese shop; there's a restaurant. It opened in the fall of 2006, replacing Petit 4 Bakery.

Beneluxx Tasting Room - 267.318.7269 - 33 South 3rd Street, Lower Level (i.e., basement speakeasy level) - Located on 3rd Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets.

The name Beneluxx derives from slang for the three affluent Western European nations of BElgium, the NEtherlands, and LUXembourg (get it, now?) Aside from the cool name, you can tell it's a 21st-century restaurant since its official phone number is a cell number (you can tell by the 267 prefix). Lots of beers and fondues on the menu.

Farmicia - 215.627.6274 - 15 S. 3rd Street - Located on 3rdd Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets. (Note the extremely easy to remember phone number...)

Prive - 215.923.8313 - 246 Market Street - Located on Market Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets. This is a nightclub, but a Mediterranean restaurant as well.

Sonny's Famous Steaks - 215.629.5760 - 228 Market Street - Located on Market Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets. It's not our favorite cheese steak place, but it's a convenient, inexpensive location if you're out enjoying Old City.

Amada - 215.625.2450 - 217 Chestnut Street - Located on Chestnut between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Upscale tapas restaurant.

Pete's Pizza Joint - 215.629.0150 - 215 Chestnut Street - Located on Chestnut Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets.

European Republic - 215.627.5500 - 213 Chestnut Street - Located on Chestnut Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets - but a better way of describing it is the intersection between Chestnut and Strawberry Streets.

This is a very difficult location, as several other restaurants - Meju (Korean), Mandoline, Dardanelles, Sabooor!, and Tropico - all tried their luck here. This is an European style, Belgian pommes frites place, which has recently opened. Perhaps European Republic will break the jinx on this spot.

Ariana Restaurant - 215.922.1535 - 134 Chestnut Street - Located on Chestnut Street, between Front and 2nd Street. This place has Afghan and Middle Eastern cuisine.

Kabul - 215.922.3676 - 106 Chestnut Street - Located on Chestnut Street, between Front and 2nd Streets. An Afghan restaurant, if you're in the mood for something exotic.

Uzu Sushi - 215.923.9290 (another easy number) - 104 Market Street - Located on Market Street, between Front and 2nd Streets.
