City Tavern - The Ultimate Old City Philadelphia Restaurant
is an incredible, meticulously researched replica of an actual 18th-century colonial tavern, on its original site at 138 South 2nd Street (2nd Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets). It was reconstructed with complete authenticity for the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. It is now a high-end restaurant, where you can eat historically accurate 18th-century meals, served by waitstaff in colonial dress. City Tavern provides an ambience that permits you to believe you are eating in the midst of the American Revolution. It was the favorite hangout for many of the Founding Fathers, when Philadelphia was the political capital of the new nation.
One note, though - it is really expensive. But even if you don't eat there, just go in to see what it looks like - it's worth a look.

This is a very difficult location, as several other restaurants - Meju (Korean), Mandoline, Dardanelles, Sabooor!, and Tropico - all tried their luck here. This is an European style, Belgian pommes frites place, which has recently opened. Perhaps European Republic will break the jinx on this spot.
