Wing Bowl 19 will be taking place at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia. As we note on the page, a chicken-wing eating contest isn't really suited to our taste in entertainment, but it obviously has appeal. Tickets are $10.00 each, with proceeds benefiting charities. Saturday, February 5, 2011 - The Blockbuster Temporary Exhibit - Leonardo da Vinci’s Workshop Opens At The Franklin Institute – Will Run Until May 22, 2011
On Saturday, February 5, 2011, yet another blockbuster temporary exhibit opens at the Franklin Institute. This month, it’s Leonardo da Vinci’s Workshop, which will run until May 22, 2011.
Leonardo comes on the heels of the Franklin Institute’s enormously successful exhibit of Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt, which was on display from June 2010 through New Year’s Weekend, 2011.
The National Constitution Center Continues Its Temporary Exhibit - Art of the American Soldier - Throughout February 2011
Every day in February 2011, you can visit the current blockbuster at the National Constitution Center - Art of the American Soldier, which exhibits the artistic works created by soldiers, during all of America’s wars. It will run deep into March, 2011.
Saturday, February 5 – Sunday, February 6, 2011 - Silk Road Opening Weekend Celebration at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology - Real Camels, an Oasis, and a Trading Bazaar! The Exhibit Itself Runs Every Day in February 2011
The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology – known for short as the Penn Museum - in University City, is one of the great, overlooked treasures of Philadelphia.
Their latest blockbuster, temporary exhibit, is Secrets of the Silk Road, all the way from China. It opens on Saturday, February 5, and will be open every day in February 2011. (It closes on June 5, 2011.)
For the opening weekend, there will be a camel-load of Silk Road-themed activities, including live camels outside, and an authentic replica of an actual Silk Road oasis and trading bazaar. The festivities begin at 10:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM, on both Saturday and Sunday. All the extra activities are included with your admission ticket. Every Day in February 2011, Eastern State Penitentiary Offers Its “Winter Adventure Tours” – See the Gothic Fortress Draped in Snow – For More Information, Call 215.236.3300
Just because the tree branches are bare, doesn’t mean that Philadelphia’s most famous Gothic castle - Eastern State Penitentiary, has shut its foreboding doors and gone into historical hibernation. You can still voluntarily gain access to it (unlike its inmates) during the frigid month of February 2011.
The Eastern State Penitentiary “Winter Wonderland Tour” lasts for one hour, and tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for students and children (7-12). You can even see photos of the Christmas celebrations, that momentarily brightened the spirits of the condemned in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The guided tour runs on weekdays, at 10:00 AM, noon, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. On weekends, it is every half hour on the half hour, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Visitor Center is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Eastern State Penitentiary is located in the trendy Fairmount neighborhood, and you’ll have a lot of bar and restaurant options nearby on Fairmount Avenue – Eastern State Penitentiary is located at 20th Street and Fairmount Avenue.
Throughout February 2011 - Anatomy/Academy Exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)
From January 29, 2011, through April 17, 2011, Anatomy/Academy Exhibition will be at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, also known as PAFA. This exhibition will illustrate how, since the 18th century, the long-standing artistic and scientific communities in Philadelphia have combined to improve understanding of the human body, and consequently, medicine itself. It will have The Gross Clinic painting by Thomas Eakins, and also key scientific and medical artifacts from Philadelphia's past. Call 215.972.7600 for more information.
