Bloktoberfest Event and Celebration in Graduate Hospital Area
UPDATE: The 3rd Annual Bloktoberfest 2011 Will Take Place on Saturday, October 15th, 2011, From Noon to 8 PM
We’ll have more details on this year’s event, soon…
Important: Note that the geographical location in 2011 is different, than the 2010 version, at the bottom of this page. This year, there will be no fewer than three blocks of South Street closed to traffic, from Broad to 17th. The family activities, from noon to 5PM will be focused on the 1600 block of South Street.
There will also be additional choices, in terms of craft beer and food vendors, than last year.
The 2nd Annual Bloktoberfest - yes, it really is spelled that way, instead of “Blocktoberfest” – it’s not a typo - takes over the 2000 block of Christian Street in the South of South neighborhood in South Philadelphia, on Saturday, October 16, 2010, from noon to 8 PM.
Bloktoberfest Musical Acts – Headlined By The Budos Band
The Budos Band is the headline act, an eclectic mix of soul and jazz. Joining them on stage is The Love Language (who previously performed at last year’s inaugural Bloktoberfest, undaunted by weather that was both rainier and warmer than customary, for October in Philadelphia). This will be their first Philadelphia appearance, since then.
Rounding out the roster are four other bands. Cozy Galaxies and ‘Allo Darlin’ (the latter, all the way from London) – as well as two bands intimately familiar with South of South (known more formally as the Graduate Hospital neighborhood), Strange Engineers and New Pony. In between acts, DJ Handsome Sam will be handling the proverbial turntables for the October event, as well.
Attendance Is Free – But If You’d Like to Try One of the 33 Craft Beers On Tap, You Have to Purchase a Beer Pass, Either In Advance, or That Day
Here are the rules for the Beer Passes:
A Beer Pass costs $10 in advance, $12 at the door. You can purchase them in advance, at one of the two festival box offices: the Beauty Shop Café at 20th and Fitzwater Streets, or the Sidecar Bar and Grille, at 22nd and Christian Streets.
For your $10 or $12, you receive three drink tickets, plus a free Bloktoberfest beer stein. One drink ticket is valid for filling your stein, once, with your choice of any of the available brews.
Should you wish to ride your bicycle to the festival, as additional bike racks will be available. (Unfortunately, the location is equidistant between two Broad Street Subway stops.)
This event is also a superb showplace, for the Philadelphia Craft Beer scene, which is the finest of any city in America.
The eleven breweries who will be participating:Bell’s Brewery, Inc.
Blue Point Brewing Company
Doc’s Draft Hard Ciders
Dock Street Ales and Lagers
Ithaca Beer Co.
Tröegs Craft Brewery
Victory Brewing Company
Yards Brewing Company
All Bloktoberfest Proceeds Will Benefit Architectural Preservation Work at Shiloh Baptist Church, Located at 2040 Christian Street
Shiloh Baptist Church – which will cast its gaze over the revelry – was designed by the legendary Philadelphia architect Frank Furness in 1868, and is listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.
Parking at Bloktoberfest – Try Not to Drive To Being With, and If You Drink, Make Absolutely Sure That You Don't Drive
There isn’t much parking, and SEPTA bus service is available. What parking does exist is mainly on Washington Street. And, of course, we urge you most strenuously, at an event which offers you three drink tickets, under no circumstances should you drink and drive. Take the bus or the subway.
The map below, shows key points on Bloktoberfest.
The two Broad Street Subway stops are noted with subway icons. The green arrows indicate the respective ends of Christian Street, between 20th and 21st Street, between which the festival will take place. The "P" icons indicate the street parking on Washington Street - everywhere on Washington Street, between the two "P"s, is recommended for parking.
